Back in time Te Rauparaha was a  Fearsome chief one day he was fighting his true enemies.  Te Rauparaha decided to go find another great tribe to help him fight. Te Rauparaha searched and came across Lake Rotoaira he pushed the wooden door open. Suddenly he saw chief Te wharerangi.

Te Rauparaha asked for protection Chief Te Wharerangi demanded Te Rauparaha to come hide in the potato pit.  Te Rauparaha Climbed into the dark gloomy potato pit Te Wharerangis people closed the potato pits cover.  Then Te Koaea came and sat in front of the potato pit's entrance.

Te Rauparaha heard the dark footsteps approaching the potato pit's entrance. He heard the dark voices of those that were trying to kill him. Suddenly he heard the footsteps fading, the voices got quiet.  Te Rauparaha was whispering to himself saying will I live? Will I live? Will I die? Will I die? When the footsteps were not heard Te Rauparaha emerged and returned home.  He told his journey to his tribe.  His story has passed through generations all the way to us  little kiwis.
